“Future Forward: Emerging Issues in Arts Management in Asia”

From 22-24 June 2018 LASALLE College of the Arts hosted a gathering of delegates featuring old and new participants of the ANCER network to share recent work and discuss emerging issues and research priorities in Asia. The day and a half long meeting opened with a simulating keynote by acclaimed Singaporean playwright and poet Alfian Sa’at, where he raised questions of diversity, democracy and inclusivity in the arts. This was followed by presentations of recent projects and topical issues in Bandung, Indonesial; Taiwan; Cambodia and the Mekong Cultural Hub, and Singapore/Malaysia.

LASALLE College of the Arts Provost Venka Puroshothoman set the stage for afternoon World Café style discussions, offering a thoughtful provocation on global shifts in socio-cultural and political environments faced by societies both in Asia and in a connected, globalized world; and the impact this has on arts management and our sector. The following discussions tackled three topics proposed in adfance by participants: (1) the building up of local knowledge and capturing of expertise in the region, and the development of case studies for education and training purposes; (2) the arts management sector’s role in facilitating cultural democracy; and (3) the inclusion of arts and culture studies, history, criticism and practice in all levels of education.

Day 2 focused on questions of the management of networks, communication platforms, research needs, and challenges of knowledge collection and dissemination in the region.
